Calif Lawmaker Aims to Restrict Taser Guns
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - A California lawmaker said on Thursday he will introduce a bill to collect data on the use of stun-guns made by Taser International Inc. and may move to sharply restrict their use.
Assemblyman Mark Leno said he is drafting his bill following six fatalities in northern California since late August due to the stun-guns, increasingly popular with police as a means to disable suspects. The guns generate 50,000-volt shocks.
The San Francisco Democrat said he would introduce his bill next week and may seek independent medical research on the health effects of shocks delivered by the stun-guns, restrictions on their use while the state learns more about them, and a ban on their personal use.
